The Brisbane City Council is under fire for not spending enough on Christmas decorations. Unlike some, I think this is great.
Some people think it is all about promoting ourselves to tourists. Some think the council has been down to Crazy Clarks.
Yesterday shopper Duncan Anderson, 54, said the lights in Queen Street Mall were the worst he’d ever seen. “I’ve got better lights at home,” he said.
“It looks as though Campbell Newman has spent a few dollars at Crazy Clarks this year. What a Scrooge.” …
Fortitude Valley shopping areas have gone without decorations altogether after traders decided not to decorate and the council didn’t step in.
Why waste all this money on lights at all? Don’t we need better roads? What about using the money to fix City Hall?
I live in a world which has its holidays based on the Christian faith. I’ll live with that. I would prefer to be granted five personal holiday days to have for myself - so if I want some time in August and February, that’s fine. You can have your Christmas and Easter.
What I don’t agree with is spending millions and millions of dollars to decorate a city in the traditional garb. Stick a tree and some lights up (of a nice quality and charm) and let that be it. If people want more, let them spend up themselves or find companies willing to take public donation for city decorations.
Don’t waste my hard earned on some blinking lights and a plastic tree.
